Bling Free Vol.2 :
"Wake Up" DJ Graffiti - Bling Free - Words: Tamara Harris |
|
Graffiti's needle writes across records mostly
from non-mainstream labels and camps. In Graf's
world this means that the shining examples of
musicianship don't glimmer from trips to Tiffanys'
(upscale jewelry store in Manhattan) but from the
sparkle of crystal Mic elocution and silver
turntables. In other words, he picks his music
like the name of the label; with his personal
concept of bling-free. Nevertheless the
tracklisting will gratify BET heads and deeper
crate diggers alike. Beats move and cross through
splendid sections of Talib Kweli's circular terror
"Good To You," the electric tom toming
"Gritgunclappinduck" and slide guitar funk in the
"Modern Man's Hustle" Graffiti's Michigan base is
laid out in the exclusives from Slum Village, Obie
Trice and One Man Army. The collaboration with MC
Lyte, "The Original Truth," reprises Lyte in a
role familiar from her "Cram To Understand U" days
as a fierce truth teller. Mixed CDs are supposed
to introduce new music and most importantly put a
tray of favored singles together in a convenient
manner because most listeners do not make their
own. DJ Graffiti has mastered this purpose using
some of the best tracks from hip-hop's underground
atlas. | | |
