A Good Look...
Travis Barker murders the drumset during the entire new game joint, "Dope Boys". I'm pretty sure this won't be the actual video, but it should be.

I Ain't Hating! But...
I just got an email with a new song by PM Dawn ft. The Backstreet Boys. Yes. You read that right. PM Dawn and the Backstreet Boys. The funny part is that the track isn't bad. Wow.

Utterly Innapropriate...
I just logged on to myspace and saw a video on the front page, "Thug Young Buck cries on the phone to 50". Wow. I had already heard the conversation, which by the way was wack for 50 to leak in the first place. It's one thing to cut off a dude's access to get dough, but to make it so that he can't even hold his head is utterly innapropriate.

A Good Look...
I wasn't sure about Wale until I heard his "Mixtape About Nothing". Son goes in something serious on that joint. If you haven't heard it, it's a free download. You need it in your life. Get it here.

I Ain't Hating! But...
I think my Moms recorded her a milli freestyle tonight....

That was sarcasm. How many more of them are we going to be subject to?

Utterly Innapropriate...
Stop putting "featuring" in the listing of your song when you sample someone on the chorus. Unless they recorded something specifically for your song, it's not "featuring" that artist.

I Ain't Hating! But...
Common's new joint with Pharrell, "Universal Mind Control", is pretty dope. I like the throwback feel of the song and that it's an umptempo song. However, one line bugs me, "gucci rockin', coochies poppin', movie watchin', booties droppin'". I'm definitely not hating, because I like the joint, but Lonnie, I think we could have done without that line. :) He said he made this new album after being at an afterparty with his DJ, HIS DJ, and the DJ coudn't play any of his music because it wasn't appropriate for the vibe of the party. I'm all for the party jams, but lets leave the coochie poppin out of it.

A Good Look...
I put a Mims track on my Killin' The Game CD, so I haven't exactly been sleeping on his talent. It's still impressive to me that he can make (what was potentially a dumbed down) hit record like "This Is Why I'm Hot", and then turn around and sneak in some ill syllable control like he does on his "A Milli Freestyle". It's kind of wild that Mims got his Weezy on better than Weezy on this one. I guess all that syrup has slowed son's brain down.

A Good Look...
Ryan Leslie is that dude. If more people in this music game were as talented as he is, the game probably wouldn't be in the shambles it's in today. I don't understand why people are still sleeping on this cat? "Diamond Girl" got a little bit of love but was nowhere near as big of a record as it should have been. Son plays all the instruments on his tracks and sings too. Can you say 2008 Stevie Wonder? Peep this youtube video of him playing out each piece of his new joint addiction.

Hmmmm...
OK. So a dude named Mazzi from S.O.U.L. Purpose made a diss track against the Cool Kids and J Electronica saying all sorts of sideways ish. Now part 2 of the track is him taking everything back and saying that it was just an experiment. The video for the second part of the song is followed by an interview with Q-Tip. It's a good look to hear Tip's perspective on the young cats that are revisiting old school styles. Overall, I don't get what Mazzi's point was with the whole situation other than to strike up some buzz for himself. He definitely had some good points during his "interview" on the video, and I agree with much of what he had to say, but why was it necessary to hate on cats and talk all greazy?

Damn Homie!
So 50 got his diamond chain snatched in Angola. That's crazy, but what's more crazy is that the guy who stole his chain got snitched on by his parents. lol What part of the game is that?

I Ain't Hating! But...
I finally got around to listening to the G-Unit, Body Snatchers mixtape. It's good to hear the Unit back making the type of music we expect from them. I think 50 had gotten away from the music a bit in the past couple of years and now he's back on his A-game. That's whats up. What is not dope is all the gunshots throughout the mixtape. Son got gunshots in the slow jam joints. What in the... The Kid be on his hustle no doubt, but when you got so many gunshots in the track that it makes the listener turn the song off it's gotten out of hand. I ain't hatin, I'm just sayin'!

A Good Look...
There's a lot of new downloads on the audio page. I've re-started my minimix series that used to be available in real audio, but now you can download the MP3s and put them on your computer or iPod. They are a mixture of new joints, classics, remixes, underground, mainstream. Basically, there's no boundaries, it's just about whatever I'm feeling at the time. I also uploaded two live mixes from my old "cutting edge" newsletter from '04. 2004 wasn't really that memorable for me thinking back, but listening to those mixes made me realize some good joints definitely dropped that year.

A Good Look...
Andre 3000 is officially my favorite lyricist of all time. After hearing his verse on "Royal Flush", the first song leaked from Big Boi's upcoming album, I don't think there's been anyone else in the game that I've heard who can speak to societal issues with double and triple layer metaphors and still have joints that are banging for the streets. I understand now why he rocks the eccentric far left clothing. Dude is genious, his brain is on another planet (pause). He would have to force himself to be "normal" to dress in attire that conforms to our standards, and he is far from normal.

Damn Homie!
50's new online video depiction of a Fat Joe funeral is one of the funniest things I've seen in a minute. I'm not a Joe Crack hater, but Curtis' tears were hilarious. It also looks like 50 got him some new teef (what's up with all the porcelain filled mouths these days?). View the video at ThisIs50.com. Now I'm going to really have to step my game up because people used to stop me and say, "you look like 50 but with better teeth". Now I guess I just look like 50 but without the dough. lol

Utterly Innapropriate...
I cannot believe R. Kelly made a song entitled "I like the Crotch on You", and I even moreso can't believe what he says in his second rap verse! Listen for yourself to see what ages he is checking for.

Hmmmm...
The Roots first single off the new album is entitled Birthday Girl and it features Fall Out Boy. It sounds like a Gym Class Heroes song. I like Gym Class Heroes, but I don't want The Roots to sound like them. The buzz single that's out now "75 Bars" has a video that just dropped where Black Thought and Questlove take a gagged and bound white suited man to a warehouse and set him on fire. I guess they have to prove they still have their Black Cards by inflicting some gratuitious violence on The Man. That's proof that they are still down for the cause, so when that first single hits we won't be confused. Hmmmm

A Good Look...
The new Rick Ross album Trilla sounds like it definitely has some strong cuts. I just heard "Tax" and "Maybach Music". Both songs are produced by the Justice League and the backdrops are bananas. I just wish Ricky was saying something. His flow is nice, but you get to the end of the song and don't remember anything he was talking about, becuase he isn't really saying anything. At least he sounds good doing it.
Hmmmm...
How come You Tube loads faster when you run your mouse back and forth over the little loading bar? Why can't I just get the supercharged loading without the additional effort?

Damn Homie!
This post starts a new category, "Damn Homie!", because the other headings just didn't do it justice. Scott Storch was ordered to pay $500,000 plus court fees to a guy he borrowed $100,000 from (to keep his home out of forclosure) in 2003. In exchange for the $100,000 loan, Storch offered to give the guy 4 beats (currently his beats are valued at $100,000 each), so he got stuck with a $500,000 judgment. Pay ya bills!

A Good Look...
I just performed at a show last night with Detroit emcee Chief. So far he has my lyric of the year, "I make music for headphones, not ring tones".
I Ain't Hating! But...
M.O.P. is leaving G-Unit records and is looking for a new label home. Is there anybody who can tell me why they signed to G-Unit in the first place? I could see the fame, glamour and glitz being the reason, but they had already signed to Rocafella only to be ignored and shelved over there. Why go to G-Unit for a second dose?

In similar news, information about Petey Pablo has been circulating saying he is dead broke and has been going to spots and forcing women to pick up the tab. Why is that similar to M.O.P.? Well, in 2005 it's rumored that Petey Pablo signed to Death Row Records. Both artists signed to labels they had no business signing to and reaped the consequences. At least M.O.P. is more well known due to their two and a half year "vacation".
Hmmmm...
This post and the one right before it come at a time when I just celebrated my 29th birthday, so I'm feeling old. But anyways... I just DJed a sweet 16 party for one of my boys little sisters and I was amazed at the young debauchery going on. I can't act like I didn't expect the youngins to be wild, I mean my generation started "freakin" and getting that grind on, and even sneaking and doing it at school dances until the chaperones caught you. But, now I guess the new thing is for a guy to get freaked down by a girl while the guy's friend stands behind him holding him up. So, when you watch it, she is grinding on him so hard that otherwise he wouldn't be able to stand up, but he has his boy behind him supporting his shoulders so she can grind him to completion. WTH!?!?!
I Ain't Hating! But...
I have been trying real hard to find reasons to support Souljah Boy, since he's having some success and I don't want to fall into backpack elitism. It seems like Souljah Boy's the new poster child for "what's wrong with Hip-Hop", especially since he recently claimed he was the hottest MC in the game right now. Sure his offerings are dumbed down, but I tried to equate him to rappers back in the day who made records with attached dances, like Joe-Ski and the "Pee-Wee Herman", and what rapper doesn't have braggadocio and claim that they're the best? However, now I've come to my senses, Souljah Boy has a record on his album called "Booty Meat", and it sounds just like the title would suggest. I ain't hating but... Wow. First "Supermanning that hoe" and now this? Naw, that's too much.
A Good Look...
There's a big update about to go down here on DJGraffiti.com. I'm talking about a blog with photos and videos, plus three new CDs that will be available on the site in the next couple days. If you haven't signed for my email newsletter, please do so to your right. I only send once a month, so you don't have to worry about getting tons of messages flooding your inbox. Thanks!
Hmmmm...
I can't believe Playaz Circle made a song called "Gucci Bag", talking about having so much money that they have to put it in a Gucci Duffle Bag. For one, now when I see you with a Duffle Bag, you getting stuck. lol And two, didn't you just make a song about duffle bags? Come on now. What's the next joint going to be, "Eddie Bauer Knapsack"?

Hmmmm...
Why does Janet Jackson's new song "Feedback" sound like it was written for Britney Spears and she intercepted it? Whoa!!! I just heard the lyric, "My swag is something serious, heavy like a first day period". All I can say about that is WOW! I just hope she doesn't follow Brit-Brit into emotional breakdown territory.

Real Talk...
Don't front, you like the Ja Rule, "Body" joint don't you? Be honest! Yup, me too. It's not a record I'm going to put on my iPod and listen to on the daily or anything, but I definitely know it would have been a big hit for him if 50 hadn't dug his grave back in the day.

A Good Look...
Go cop Wyclef's new album. It's so refreshing. I actually listened to the snippit tape in my car for 3 straight days. It's great to hear some true originality from a Hip-Hop artist.
Hmmmm...
I just watched The Hills episode where Heidi puts Spencer in check after he tried to stage a quick Vegas wedding. It seems to me that she is really starting to pimp him instead of the other way around. Hmmmmm.

Yeah, I watch the Hills. You got a problem with that?
A Good Look...
Freeway is a beast with the spit game. I just got back from a listening party for his new album, "Free At Last", where he rapped along to all of the songs. I knew he was nice, but that definitely gave me a new respect. Especially check for "When They Remember", where he goes in something serious and the beat is extra hard (nh). EARLY!
Hmmmm...
How come there is no phrase to say when someone coughs? Someone can be hacking up a lung and folks just sit there and look at them. And then people correct you, and say "That was a cough, but thanks anyway", if you say "God Bless You" when they cough. So you'll pass on God's blessings since you didn't actually sneeze? lol
A Good Look...
I won't front, I watch this Tila Tequila reality show. I have to say, she is by far the most "real" reality love show host I've witnessed. She seems like she's looking for a down to earth, honest, genuine person, which is definitely a good change.
A Good Look...
When is Lil Wayne gonna let up? Dude has been getting it in for multiple years now. He has turned the new release game into a "Featuring Lil Weezy" mixtape. I really can't think of any rapper that has gone this hard for this long nonstop (nh).
A Good Look...
Hurricane Chris' (of 'A Bay Bay' fame) new single is crazy. I just knew he would one hit and quit on us, but the new joint is produced by Mr. Collipark and samples Earth Wind & Fire. Don't Sleep.
Hmmmm...
How did VH1, a station that 5 years ago refused to play a Hip-Hop record become the station most supportive of quality Hip-Hop music? From the Hip-Hop Honors show, to the Soul of VH1 and the other documentary type programming they've done recently, VH1 is really holding us down. Not to mention the fact that BET's Rap City has now been moved to air at 1 in the morning, and Yo MTV Raps is long, long gone. Definitely makes me go hmmmm... but daps to VH1!
Real Talk...
RIP Shakey Jake, an Ann Arbor legend. Your enthusiastic presence, singing and dancing will definitely be missed around the streets of Ann Arbor.

Hmmmm...
I'm an avid watcher of Run's House, so I was excited to see Run's daughters drop their "Pastry" sneaker line for women. However, seeing the new shoes on the commercial makes me feel like they should have just left the shoe designing to Nike and Adidas. Doh!
A Good Look...
I'm not really a big fan of country music, and I'm a firm believer now that Kenny Chesney is going to get smashed by Kanye and Fiddy... but I definitely have to applaud the country music videos for having real women in them. I never flip past GAC and see unhealthy stick figures, so that's a good look. I'm not sure why that was relevant for me to tell ya'll, but there you go.
A Good Look...
Thank God it wasn't Hip-Hop cats or black folks fighting at the VMA's! It was hilarious how everybody who came up had to comment on it just to make sure it was known that those two groups of people aren't the only ones acting utterly innapropriate at award shows! Maybe Bill O'Raggedy and the rest of the critics will take a day off.
Words of Wisdom
Set A Goal: If you don't know where you want to go, any path will take you there.

Hmmmm...
Although I've been giving props to Kanye for making better music than 50, I have to give it to Curtis. "I Get Money" and "Ayo Technology" are both getting a much better response in the clubs than any songs off Kanye's album. I don't know who to pick for the #1 debut at this point... Maybe I should put my money on Kenny Chesney!
I Ain't Hating! But...
Enough is enough. No more dance remixes using Sweet Dreams or Young Folks.
A Good Look...
This J*Davey, "Land of the Lost" mixtape is going to be the soundtrack to the rest of my summer. As my boy DJ Apocolypse would say, "This is that crack"!
Real Talk...
I heard some new tracks from Kanye's album. Yeezy is crushing Curtis right now (not that he wasn't already).

Utterly Innapropriate...
I don't want to hear anybody else saying that a producer is the "reincarnation of Dilla", or the "new Preemo". Neither will ever be true. There will only be 1 Dilla, and Preemo is still very much doing his thing, stop acting like he's dead! No new producer you will ever compare to Dilla or Preemo can lay the foundation those cats brought to the game. Also I haven't seen another Hip-Hop producer as consistent as either of those two (except maybe for Dr. Dre), where you know that a track by that producer is going to pack heat just by seeing the producer's name on the outside packaging. For years I bought 12" on sight just becuase they were produced by Dilla or Preemo. I can't say that about any other producer.

Hmmmm...
Do gay dudes say "no hetero"? hehe

Real Talk...
No more songs with "Dope Boy" as, or in the title please.

Real Talk...
I'm not hating here even a little bit. Straight real talk. 50 Cent is definitely one of the most intelligent cats in the game and I respect alot of his accomplishments, but the new joints I've heard (with the exception of "I Get Money", which I hear had actually already been done by a cat named Jimmie Hoffa from Mass.) are all very mediocre records. I'm listening to the latest leak of a song produced by Timbaland and featuring Justin Timberlake and it's making me wonder if 50 is on his way out? I honestly hope not. Half the world claims we resemble each other, so I'd like to see the brother shine. But right now, I just don't know. Quit playin' Curtis!

I Ain't Hating! But...
What remix is Jim Jones not on? I'm wondering if son isn't expecting to have a second hit so he's riding out the fame from "We Fly High" (and other people's hits) as much as possible. Can't hate on somebody being smart and doing what they can to stay relevant. Props to Fat Joe who never goes for long without a big hit, but he's been riding that remix wagon too!

Utterly Innapropriate...
Maybe I'm just old, but I'm tired of seeing cats no bigger than 5'6" walking around the stage in skinny jeans tht are way to small. I don't want to see your whole a$$ hanging out while you are performing. If your belt buckle is tickling your balls then pull your damn pants up! And what the hell is the belt buckle for anyway if your pants are around your ankles?!?

A Good Look...

"News has surfaced in Harlem, NY, that local delis have been selling counterfeit Trojan Magnum condoms, according to local reports. Packages of the Trojan Magnums in New York were tested and deemed counterfeit, after Trojan’s parent company, Church & Dwight, could not confirm their legitimacy." What in the &^#^$!

First 50 Cent made "Candy Shop"... Then he started hanging out with Michael Jackson... Now his latest single is called "Amusement Park". If the next single features R. Kelly somebody call the cops!

Why is this Garden Fresh Gourmet "Jack's Special" Salsa so damn good?
Real Talk...
Minister Farrakhan issues a challenge to rappers to unite and realize their power. "What they see is your power," Minister Farrakhan said. "And now they want to reclaim their children, so they want to make the enemy now Hip-Hop. The enemy is not Hip-Hop. They asked on TV if Hip-Hop was art or poison. Hip-Hop is art that has been poisoned."

I Ain't Hating! But...
What record is Akon not featured on?

Real Talk...
Cam'ron is set to appear on a new episode of 60 minutes where he says, "If he lived next door to a serial killer he wouldn't tell on the the killer, becuase that would be snitching, he'd probably just move." Are you forreal homie? What if the dude killed your sister before you had a chance to move away? I guess he'd just get back by killing the serial killer and hope Curtis doesn't snitch on him.

I Ain't Hating! But...
In the wake of all of the controversy over the Don Imus situation and the resulting heavy scrutiny of Hip-Hop, Paul Wall is announcing "Pimp Killa Thug" and his debut album. "Pimp Killa Thug"? Wow. That name doesn't even sound real. Sounds like some sketch comedy, Dave Chapelle ish if you ask me.

A Good Look...
Mad props to DJ Khaled. I just heard another track off his new LP to be released on Koch called "New York". Cool & Dre are on the beat, and it's a heatrock. Son should be an A&R. If more joints on people's albums sound like the songs on his Koch compilations maybe folks could sell some albums past the first week.
Utterly Innapropriate...
If every time you spit a "dope" metaphor you have to say "get it" at the end of the line, then you probably just need to step your spit game up. I should already "get it" without you telling me to.

I Ain't Hating! But...
Nas makes another appearance in my news updates. "Controversial rapper The Game has revealed that he no longer calls himself Hurricane Game and will now go by Murder Game, given to him by Nas, according to MTV News." I'm not even sure what to say about this one. All I could think when I read this was, "Forreal?!?"

A Good Look...
Fellow Sky Children family member Buff 1 released his solo debut LP entitled "PURE" to a sold out crowd in Ann Arbor. The album is ridiculous, so make sure you cop that on his myspace page.
I Ain't Hating! But...
In Nas' single "Can't Forget About You" he proudly proclaims, "I go by N now, just one syllable". Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't "Nas" one syllable to begin with?

A Good Look...
Thank you to everyone who came out to support recently at the Shoe Fetish event at Live @ PJ's. We had over 600 people in attendance dressed in some of the illest kicks imaginable! Also mad props to the Clipse who came out to Elevation and parlayed following their Ann Arbor performance at the Blind Pig.
I Ain't Hating! But...
It's funny as H E double hockey sticks that LL Cool J is in negotiations to endorse chapstick. His management was quoted as saying, "It's an obvious fit. LL has been licking his lips for 20 years."

A Good Look...
Yes, I'm feeling very "radio friendly" lately, but it's beacuse I'm enjoying more of what I hear. What follows are Graffiti's Most Underrated Radio Spitters:
1. Busta Rhymes (Spits any tempo with sick precision)
2. Fabolous (Deceiving slow flow, but don't sleep)
3. Lil Wayne (Less underrated lately, but he still got heat)
Real Talk...
Don't front, Graffiti got love for the radio. I can't say snap music was really my thing, but I'm a fan of the mixture of down south flows with what would generally be considered more traditional Hip-Hop beats (i.e. Rich Boy, Rick Ross, Smitty & Jeezy... of course pioneers in the game like UGK, Outkast and Scarface get props too).

I Ain't Hating! But...
Information has recently been released stating that 9th Wonder and Little Brother have parted ways? I know LB seemed like they were paying close attention to the Slum Village blueprint, but this is going a bit too far!

Real Talk...
Prayers go out to the family of producer and DJ, Disco D, who commited suicide on January 23, 2007. Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Dave was a very talented guy, who in the last couple hears had solidified himself as one of the better new producers of quality Hiphop. His production on the 50 cent song "Ski Mask Way" is probably what he was best known for (outside of his prestige as a Ghettotech DJ and producer), but my favorite track was AZ's, "City of Gods".

A Good Look...
Finally the redesign of DJGraffiti.com is here! This is just the beginning, but it took a couple good weeks of work for me to even get this much knocked out, so I'm happy to be moving into my new home. I've got plenty of bells and whistles to add to the site so keep checking back for more! If you have suggestions or comments you can reach me at graffiti@djgraffiti.com, but make the message subject look important or you might get deleted with the spam.

Real Talk...
Today is a sad day for all DJs. DJ's Drama and Don Cannon have been arrested for the sale of what have been called "counterfit CDs". The RIAA is treating the mixtape like a bootleg copy of an artist's album. I'm happy that the future of my mixtape career is focused on fully licensed CDs, but it's definitely time for some ground breaking resolution to uphold the DJ, the foundation of Hip-Hop.

I Ain't Hating! But...
Why is Chamillionaire rapping like 50 on his new single "Criminal"? But then again, after he got shot people asked 50 why he stopped rapping like a New Yorker and started rapping like he was from Down South, so I guess it's ok.

Real Talk ...
It's messed up when the act on stage finishes performing and cats end up giving a big applause, but it's because they are happy to see the group finish rocking and not because they killed it.

A Good Look...
According to the Detroit Free Press, Detroit's own Trick Trick will soon be the newest signee to G-Unit Records. Honestly, I'm happy to finally see a G-Unit signing that makes sense. I'm glad I feel that this is a positive move for The Unit too. Otherwise I might get beat down. The funny part is that I'm not even joking... I really would probably get beat down. lol

Utterly Innapropriate...
Why is everyone rapping over their lyrics these days? I remember the days when the dopest emcee was the one who could rock the crowd and keep the energy high with no vocals on the track and no hype man either! Now it's like the more people you have on stage the "better" your performance must be. Plus, half the time folks are just doing background vocals for themselves since the rapping on the track is louder than they are. What the...?

I Ain't Hating! But...
When is R. Kelly's case going to trial? How long can you hold off a case where there is (allegedly) a video of you peeing on an underage girl?

I Ain't Hating! But...
When Jay-Z said he's the "Mike Jordan of Recording" he didn't lie. He really is the MJ of rap. He managed to be on top of the game and retire on top, then come back as a fraction of the legend we once knew. His album definitely isn't wack, but for a man who has multiple classics under his belt, and any producer he could think of at his fingertips I think that "Kingdom" should "Come-Again"...

Real Talk ...
I believe it's a consensus among men everywhere. When it comes to Ciara, you know Bow Wow wasn't hitting that right! He was definitely a boy doing a man's job.

"I'd be lying if I said I don't want to sell millions and become a household name, but I won't lose myself to do it," says Common. "I see a lot of people in hip-hop who don't love the music. It's become the new dope game—they're in it to make money. If they could obtain that same kind of money or fame by dancing on one leg like a fool, they'd be doing that." That's real talk right there. But I think it's one step further than being the "new dope game". It's not the new dope game, the rap game IS the dope game. Listen to half of the lyrics.

James Brown RIP. The Godfather of Soul and the Godfather of Hip-Hop.

How Come I like all the new Omarion singles? I'm not mad about it either. Son has been getting his grown man on lately.

The other day I went to Burger King. I pull up to the drive thru, ask for a Whopper cut in half and the guy on the other end of the intercom says, "We are all out of cut in half Whoppers." He continues with, "We don't have any more cut in halfs but I can give you a butter knife." To that I reply, "Uhhh, ummmm (then think about what fast food folks do to people's food who give them a hard time, so I say)... Ok".

But now I have three questions: 1) How is that having it my way? 2) How do you have regular Whoppers and knives, but you're out of ones that are cut in half? 3) Why did he forget to put my plastic butter knife in my bag?

I Ain't Hating! But...
How come I would like most of the songs on Diddy's "Press Play" album if he wasn't on them? I even made a re-edit of his newest single with Keyshia Cole and pulled his vocals off the intro, now it's that jam! I'm definitely not hating on the man, I'm a fan of Diddy for raising his weight so many times in the past when I thought it was over for him and for Bad Boy. But, I do think that he should stick to the ad libs and leave the rapping to all the dope Ghostwriters that penned his records.
